This week, I continually reminded myself that life is a marathon, not a sprint! And I’m here to tell you that if the school year had lasted one more day, someone would have had to carry my children and me over the finish line! We are SO thankful that school is out for summer.

Summer is my favorite season of the year. I love seeing a glowing sun in a cobalt sky. I love the heat, the long bright days, and the juicy tomatoes from the garden. I love being on or near water, whether it be lake, beach, or pool. So, with a summer theme in mind, here is a poem I’d like to share with you.

Summer Sun
by Robert Louis Stevenson

Great is the sun, and wide he goes
Through empty heaven with repose;
And in the blue and glowing days
More thick than rain he showers his rays.

Though closer still the blinds we pull
To keep the shady parlour cool,
Yet he will find a chink or two
To slip his golden fingers through.

The dusty attic spider-clad
He, through the keyhole, maketh glad;
And through the broken edge of tiles
Into the laddered hay-loft smiles.

Meantime his golden face around
He bares to all the garden ground,
And sheds a warm and glittering look
Among the ivy’s inmost nook.

Above the hills, along the blue,
Round the bright air with footing true,
To please the child, to paint the rose,
The gardener of the World, he goes.

Thank you for supporting locally grown agriculture and for buying locally. Have a great Sunday, and we’ll see you at the Market.

Thanks,

Beverly

P.S. Concord Street Sweets will be away from the Market for the next three or four weeks. We have some traveling to do.

Greener Acres Farm:  New This Week at the Market

New This Week at the Market

A Once A Year Special Culinary Treat — Garlic Scapes!!

Never heard of a garlic scape?? You do not know what you are missing. These thin, curly, vibrantly green stalks come into season in the late spring and early summer. Garlic scapes are the stalks that grow from the bulbs of hardneck garlic plants. The scapes taste mild and sweet, like chives or scallions, but with a hint of unmistakable garlicky flavor that’s softer than its bulbous counterpart. They’ll keep for weeks in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.

The very last of Green"er" Acres Farm asparagus for this year.

Only 3 half pound bunches remain. Order early, they go fast!

Plantain Healing Salve

Plantain, the common backyard plant/weed, not the relative of the banana, has been used as a healing skin remedy a far back as the Native Americans. Plantain is considered helpful for: bee/wasp stings, spider bites, mosquito and other bug bites, poison ivy/poison oak/sumac,eczema, psoriasis, sunburn, diaper rash, and even pet’s “hot spots” Our plantain leaves are harvested from lawns not treated with chemicals

STRAWBERRIES!!

The very first of our strawberries. Unsprayed, picked when ripe, not partially green like those that were shipped in from out of state. Limited quantities. Please only one per household to allow everyone to enjoy the first of our local strawberries.

And don’t forget all of our other delicious items

Market News

It’s a holiday Monday, where we remember those fallen in our wars. It’s also the symbolic beginning of summer, marked with cookouts and other outdoor activities. If you’re out there, grilling your locally grown burgers and veggies, please remember those who have left us.

There’s not much new to report this week. Summer veggies are really starting to come in now, and the recent rains and cool nights might keep the spring items around a little longer. We’re at the change of the season now, and everything is very weather dependent. Just a little too much heat will end the spring items, and just not enough sun will keep the summer goodies from ripening. If we get a few days in a row on the hot and dry side and the spring crops will begin struggling, but that can all change day to day.

We’ve starting to run low on our supply of salmon from Doug’s Wild Alaskan Salmon. Doug and his family are now on their boats, catching fish while the summer weather makes it possible for them to do so. We may not get a fresh supply until the boats get put back in the dock at the end of August, so what we have listed will have to do us for a while. Now’s the time to stock your freezer if you don’t want to go without this summer.

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is up and running, Saturdays from 9am to 1pm, and you can find out more here: http://www.athenslandtrust.org/west-broad-farmers-market/. The Oconee County Farms Market is open on Saturdays in Watkinsville. Their website is www.oconeefarmersmarket.org. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on Saturdays from 9-12. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
