The Wednesday Market:  It's Sunday - Time to Order!

Good morning.

The Wednesday Market is open for orders. Please place your order by 10 p.m. Monday. Orders are ready for pick up between 3 and 6 p.m. Wednesday. See the website for details on this week’s product offerings. Here is the link: http://wednesdaymarket.locallygrown.net/market

I learned this morning that the weather man is forecasting temperatures in the 80s for this week, along with good chances for rain. We could certainly use some in Zebulon! Although other parts of the county have had significant rainfall in the last week or so, we are dry as a bone here. We have almost given up on the plants at our house. Hydrangeas are wilted, my herbs are drying up, and the tomato plant has stopped producing. Only the figs seem to love the heat and dryness!

Thank you for your support of locally grown agriculture. We hope you have a great Sunday, and we’ll see you at the Market.

Thanks,

Beverly

Dawson Local Harvest:  Okra and the Ghost: New Produce Arrivals

Dawson Local Harvest for August 12th

OKRA and The GHOST: New Produce Arrivals

HI EVERYONE!

Got a few new things to talk about this week. LEILANI’S is adding Okra to the Market for the first time this year. It’s young, fresh, and perfectly sized for cooking. Only listing 3 Available so order early, but if I can scrounge more together I will. And the first Peppers are here, with the Green Ghost Pepper, milder but still bitey cousin of the famer red Ghost Pepper, and a nice small Sweet Red Pepper great for salads and cooking. They join Spring Green Onions, Squash, Tomatoes, various Zucchinis, Cucumbers, and more, so take a look at all the goodies in the Vegetable section this week.

FIVE HENS FARMS has added PeeWee Free-range Eggs to their Listings. These are smaller Eggs which are less expensive versions of their larger brothers. I use this size all the time and they taste just as great and work just as well for cooking anything besides Sunny-Side Up Eggs.

Because MY DAILY BREAD has such wonderful Breads, Bagels, Brownies, and Tiramisu we tend to forget that they also have superb Jams, Jellies, and Preserves, many of them organic, like their amazing Hot Pepper Peach Jam. There are great items in the Prepared Foods and Processed Foods categories every week. Don’t forget to give them a look!

THE MARKET WILL OPEN Sunday night at 8pm!

REMEMBER! You can order until Tuesday night at 9 pm. Pick up your order at Leilani’s Gardens Friday afternoons from 4 to 7pm.

You’ll find the DAWSON LOCAL HARVEST at http://dawsonville.locallygrown.net

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible! We guarantee your satisfaction with all products in the DAWSON LOCAL HARVEST.

Have a happy and healthy week!

Market News

GREAT morning all!

WELCOME:
Stephanie Kraft with The Krafty Kupboard

Locally produced, organic foods and snacks made with ingredients sourced from US growers. Foods are made ready to eat or in convenience packaging to make home preparation quick and easy. Most foods are gluten-free and vegan and prepared without the major food allergies (gluten/wheat, soy, eggs, diary, peanuts, tree-nuts, shell fish). Any foods that do contain these items are clearly labeled and produced on separate equipment and in separate preparation areas to ensure cross-contamination does not occur.

My goal is to make eating locally produced, organic, non-genetically modified foods easier for busy families.

Stephanie will bring samples of her incredible hummus (which sells prepared and a fantastic mix to make at home). She will also have some of the baked items prepared from the mixes she sells on our market!
She joins us at pickup THIS week so please don’t miss out!

Did you know you can see a list of new products? Simply go to the market tab, click that, then on the left sidebar under the shopping cart and items listings is display options, if you click on subscribe to an RSS feed, that shows new products and Stephanie has an impressive list easily seen there!

Ashleigh and I continue to strive to reach our vision of bringing the most superior products from local producers/craftsfolk and farmers and so far so good wouldn’t you agree?

ALFN Local Food Club:  Market Is Open

ALFN Members,

The market is open! Peaches, spaghetti squashes, okra, tomatoes, onions, and potatoes are still producing in the market. As our growers begin to transition into fall plantings, make the most of what the summer has to offer. There are some excellent deals on the market right now for folks who want to store for the winter!

Program Manager Position

The Arkansas Local Food Network welcomes applicants for the part-time position of Program and Market Manager. We’re looking for someone who is passionate about the local food movement to manage our programs, communicate with our stakeholders, and contribute to the sustainability and growth of our mission. A full job description is available by e-mail to arlocalfoodnetwork@gmail.com. Interested candidates should send a cover letter, resume, and contact information for two professional references to arlocalfoodnetwork@gmail.com by Sunday, August 14th.

Scarcity & Fear

I’ve mentioned before that our current economic system operates on the idea of scarcity. Pricing on commodities and services are driven by the idea that there isn’t enough. Supply and demand are driven by the engine of scarcity. The politics of scarcity foment fear-mongering among citizens, drive national conversation, and structure the speeches of presidential-hopefuls. But the model of scarcity only works in linear systems. Cyclical, rejuvenating systems (i.e. natural systems) are revolving doors where scarcity meets sustainability. In any given election year, the politics of scarcity drive fear and team-based politics. However, the cycle of sustainable life and resource production continues. The pumpkins will be fat on the vine regardless of apocalyptic politics. However, with each decision we as a civilization make away from sustainability and towards scarcity, we cultivate a future according to our current worldview.

As you know, I’m a fan of The Story of Stuff. They have an older video on moving away from our current economic model toward a sustainable one. During this election season, their video on The Story of Broke seems pertinent. Check it out if you have 10 minutes.

Thanks

——————————————————————————————————————————————————
NEWS AND NOTES

Honey is back on the market! Steve’s Bees has listed four sizes of local honey for your eating or baking. Using local honey really helps with allergies, and there are plenty of allergies in Tennessee.

As we move into August, the variety of vegetables on the market is still awesome. We have: bush beans, beets, cucumbers, eggplant, garlic, arugula, kohlrabi, lettuce, onions; bell, jalapeno, and banana peppers; red potatoes, yellow squash, Swiss chard, several types of tomatoes, and zucchini.

Also you will find a great selection of fresh-cut herbs to help to bring out the flavor of those vegetables and your other summer cooking.

This week we feature a couple of items from other sections of the market as well. Remember that we also have delicious pork and beef cuts, rich creamline milk, organic free-range chicken and duck eggs, jams and jellies, live plants for your perennial border, porch, or patio. Please take note of our great selection of hand crafted farm products, candles, essential oils, and bath & beauty products. Stop by Square Books soon and see our market table, with lots of non-perishable farm products for sale. Pick up some jam or jelly, hand lotion or soap, herbal tea, a candle, or a basket of herb plants to enjoy or to give as a gift.

(L to R) One of several Lotion Bars and Dried CNG Strawberries from Solace Farm, Toad Lily and Rex Begonia Plants from Dogwood Valley Greenhouse, Local Honey from Steve’s Bees.

IMPORTANT ORDERING AND PICKUP INFORMATION

Ordering will be open until TUESDAY at 10 p.m., and your order will be available for pickup on THURSDAY between 4:00 and 5:30 at Square Books, 113 East Main Street, Manchester. We can also hold your order in the refrigerator till Friday, if it’s more convenient for you to pick it up between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. If you prefer to utilize this free service, please make a note on your order or call my cell at (931) 273-9708. If neither of those pickup times works for you, please make a note on the order, and we will work out an alternative arrangement.

Thanks so much for your support of Manchester Locally Grown Market, and your friends and neighbors who have grown and produced these items. Please encourage our local farmers by helping to spread the word about our wonderful market to everyone you know. We offer a great variety of local farm products, and our items will be in your hands in time to plan for the weekend. Wonderful local products are available for ordering from the comfort of your own computer.

More new farmers are considering joining our market, if they can expect enough sales to help pay their transportation costs. Please help us grow the market by sharing this e-mail with your friends and inviting them to give us a try. And if you haven’t ordered from Manchester Locally Grown for a while, please check out our wide variety of offerings this week. Also please let us know if we can improve our selection or scheduling in any way to better suit your needs.

Blessings,
Linda
