Champaign, OH:  A Fond Farewell to February!

Tonight we get ready to say farewell to the month of love…the month of February!! And, to me, this is always the goodbye to the winter dreary, and hello, soon, very soon, to the springtime loveliness of sun, warmer days, and the onset of the growing season!!

Yes…goodbye to the dormant days, and hello to the oncoming vibrant days of growth, color, sun, and longer hours of lightness…

We have so much to look forward to but we also have so much to offer, you, now!! Take this time, up until tomorrow evening at 10pm, to get your orders in!!

Help us say, hello, to March, by placing an order that will help to greet the sunshine days!!

Peace, Love, Good Vibes…
Cosmic Pam

Old99Farm Market:  Old 99 Farm, week of Feb 28 2016

This is a leap year, one extra day in the calendar. Anyone born on Feb 29th?
There were lots of public scheduled for today in the Leap Manifesto campaign to reverse climate disruption and reform the economic system. Check out the statement of climate rights at "LeapManifesto’:www.leapmanifesto.org and LeapYear2016 to find out more.

Special this week is spaghetti squash, two for one. You can cook and freeze for quick meal under sauces or as a side in place of potatoes.

Remember the Paris Agreement, so long ago Dec 2015? I was one who felt dismayed at the meager scope of agreement that was reached. I hoped that maybe the main players had a plan: minimal win now for big win later. In three years all parties are supposed to report back and update their plans to reduce carbon.

One of my main ‘go-to’ guys on climate is Albert Bates, I have posted his work here often. He has attended all COP climate summits! His first post after Paris was flat disappointment. Now with a couple of months he’s got a more complete picture. He says " what actually came out of Paris, there’s a paradigm shift. It’s giving rise to a geotherapy which puts biology first. It’s challenging big agriculture at the global industrial level. It places the soil-food-life web near the center of discussions in every COP to come."
And “The real victory at COP21, I think, was the recognition that we had this previously hidden weapon to fight climate change – the role that soils can play in reversing global warming. Managing carbon content in soils is really the best way to take control of the carbon cycle.”

I have been studying permaculture for 10 years now, practising it here for 8. It says the same and shows how to indeed treat the soil as a living system that store carbon. I farm that way. I buy thousands of dollars of hay and straw to feed animals who poop out 80% of it which I return to the soil on our farm. Better soil, better crops, better carbon capture. There are other ways too, but that is a main one. So when you buy food here, you are helping me do that. Plain and simple.

This week pretty much same as last week, except for the special on squash. As of Feb 28th, we can offer the following crops: sweet potato, cilantro, parsley, kale, spaghetti and turban squash, purple potatoes and a new crop of arugula. We’re taking advance orders for sides of pork and lamb.

I remind you of Easter if a leg of lamb is in your plans, please talk to me. (Speaking of lambs, Kazlyn shepherded triplets on Thurs last, was up most of the night, and all 3 are doing well.)

On March 16th there is a Food Freedom Rally in Newmarket at the courthouse. I am going and invite any of you to come with. The point is to come show your support for the right to eat what you choose, specifically raw milk!

MARCH 16, 2016 | Rally @ 8:30am | Hearing @ 9:30am
Ontario Court of Justice, 50 Eagle Street West, Newmarket
(south-west corner of Yonge St. & Eagle St. W.)

Who decides and controls what you eat and drink?
Not you apparently. The government has decided that raw milk is so dangerous that it must “protect” you by stopping the flow at the source – your farmer.
You go out of your way to access our fresh, nutritious milk, knowing it’s sourced from healthy, pastured cows and handled properly. You want raw milk but the current laws forbid farmers from selling or giving it to you.

After 22 years of raids and harassment against one courageous farmer, Michael Schmidt at Glencolton Farms, the government has just crossed the line. They intend to shut down ALL raw milk producers in Ontario.
The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, and the Regional Municipality of York have issued Notices of Application for a court injunction against Michael Schmidt, his wife and son, members of the farm co-operative, another person, John Doe, Jane Doe and Persons Unknown, and the Church of the Christian Community in Canada.
They were accused of contravening the provincial Milk Act, and the Health Protection and Promotion Act. They’re being told to stop selling and distributing raw milk. The church allowed the Glencolton van to use its parking lot. Parties will appear in court on March 16th.

Unite and defend your freedom to choose what foods you consume, not just milk.

It’s NOT a done deal. We have to make it clear that we will not be intimidated. Contact me if you can come.

Healthy eating,
Ian, Cami and Kazlyn

Market News

Hello!

It’s a beautiful, Leap Year kind of day out there!

We still have some great vegetables available! Lots of spinach and lettuces, other greens as well! Great carrots, sweet potatoes, fresh oyster mushrooms, and other lovely items are still on the Market!

Remember we will be off next week, so stock up now on your veggies, meats and eggs!

  • Pre-Order Bouquets are available! This is a special offer as a way for you to save some money on flowers this summer. It also helps support Tally’s early season farm needs, like buying seeds, and supplies. This is a low-income time for farmers, and some investment now in the upcoming season is really helpful! And, during these gray days, how wonderful to think of those vibrant, joyful flower bouquets you can order each week during the summer! Pre-pay now for the Bouquet of the Week Club bouquets, and save yourself $20.00! You get 10 weeks of large bouquets for 12.00 each (normally would be $14.00), and can order them whenever it is convenient for you!

We are on an every-other week schedule through March! Stock up this week on what you can . Our next delivery will be on Wednesday, March 16th.

Also, we are implementing a new policy regarding egg cartons. All eggs will now be packed in new cartons each week.* We will no longer be accepting any other egg cartons than the ones you receive your eggs in from us*. This will better help us ensure and monitor quality . If you did not receive the carton from any eggs bought from us, please do not bring it to us to reuse or recycle. Thank you!

We so appreciate your support, and look forward to seeing you on Wednesday!

John and Tallahassee

Heritage Farm has Pig Hearts, Thick Cut Pork Chops and Smoked Polish Links on Special this week!

The Chops are fabulous and I am trying the Smoked Polish Links this week! Also, I have ordered the Ready to Eat Pulled Pork and the Canadian Bacon! Sarah and her husband are quite taken with the Pulled Pork and I am looking forward to trying it! Uncured Hams are listed this week! Large, (approx 23#’s) — one of these would be perfect for Easter. I noticed that Greg also listed a few Whole Chickens in his offerings this week! This will be the last of Whole Chickens until May, so take note!Beef, Chicken, Lamb and Pork — Heritage Farm has it all!

Don’t forget Carrell Farms has Alpaca, Water Buffalo and Lamb. The Alpaca Sausage is great on the grill or cooked in an iron skillet. I use a mix of Alpaca Bones and Water Buffalo Bones to make a very rich Bone Broth! Alpaca and Lamb also make a rich, yummy Bone Broth!

Although Doug of Doug’s Garden will no longer have access to his wonderful space, he has harvested lots of Carrots and is offering them this week! These are YUMMY!

Grow With the Flow is offering English Pea Sprouts this week!

Morris of Healing Earth Farms now has 4 sizes of eggs available.
Eggs (Organic, from Free Range Hens) These are really flavorful and yolks are orange!
3 varieties of Cabbages
Purple Top Turnips
Hakurie Turnips
Georgia Collard Greens

Cereals and Grains

Did you know that we have several different options for Organic Cereals and Grains?
Amish Cereal (Organic Red Wheat and other goodies)
Rolled Oats (Organic Rolled Oats)
Stone Ground Grits (Organic Corn Grits)
Einkorn Wheat Berries Organic Perfect to mill yourself and make your own Bread!
Einkorn Flour Organic Freshly milled when ordered!
Red Wheat Organic Freshly milled when ordered or request the berries and mill yourself!

Veggies: Although we have had some beautiful weather and our Veggie Farmers are hard at work getting early Spring items planted, we are technically still in the Winter Season. Take heart! Soon, Back River Farm, Fry Farm, Grow With the Flow will be bringing the fruits of their labors to the Market and we will all welcome them back with open arms! The Veggie Patch and Healing Earth Farm will continue to add products as Mother Nature allows! So, hold on, my friends and pray for good weather and bountiful Harvests!

In the past, Greg of Heritage Farm has reserved his excellent produce for his own Market and CSA customers. This year, Greg and Lainya have made some changes and have hired a Produce Manager! This will greatly increase their harvest and we will be fortunate in gaining this additional source of yummy Veggies! We all appreciate the goodness of the Meat from Heritage Farm and judging from this experience as well as Veggies I was privileged to try last year, their produce will delight also! I am grateful for Greg’s continued participation in our Markets and welcome his new offerings!

Starting this next week, I intend to return to writing my missives and musings. In them, I hope to keep you informed of what is happening with our Farmers as well as tidbits of information, links to information regarding challenges our Farmers face in bringing healthy, chemical free, nutrient-dense food to us! Seemingly little nuances in laws to rules of meat processing facilities affect the Farmers and ultimately us in very real ways! Stay tuned!

My Daily Bread does not have listings on the Market this week. They will return next week.
